Scheduled Maintenace for Ninja 650R/ ER6

There was a query from a fellow ER6 rider whom had just bought his ride and wanted to ask about the scheduled maintenance for his ride. Well, just as a quick guide to all and sundry, here's what you can expect :
To decipher the above scheduled maintenance tables, I'll use my Green Hornet, which is fast approaching the 12k km mileage, as an example.

At 12k, inspections have to be performed on the following :
- fuel system,
- cooling system,
- air suction system,
- clutch,
- wheels and tires,
- final drive,
- brakes,
- suspension,
- steering play,
- electrical system,
- chasis parts, and
- bolts and nuts tightness.

Besides the above inspection, the following changes are required :
- engine oil,
- oil filter, and
- spark plug.

The Green Hornet was a Japan CBU machine brought in by Welly World Cycle Sdn Bhd; but since the 1-year warranty period from Kawasaki is over and done with, I could choose to service the bike with them or other bike shops from hereon.

Point to note is that the warranty provided by Kawasaki Malaysia is only for CKD machines-  and you could check on the status of your bikes' birthright from the bike registration card/ pink slip. If it's CKD Malaysia, it would be stated as "Pemasangan Tempatan".

Mine is stated as "Kenderaan Import Baru".

The Green Hornet has been using fully-synthetic engine oil since day one, so I would most probably continue using the better premium oil to maintain its good condition. It would require 2 litres of the 10W40 good stuff, and these would typically cost approximately RM80.

The original Kawasaki oil filter would cost approximately RM45 while the Iridium/NGK spark plugs would cost RM40 (needs 2 pieces). So overall servicing at 12k km mileage would amount to approximately RM205.

And with this servicing, I shall be installing the Acumen digital gear indicator and tail tidy set, of which labour should cost approximately RM50 and RM20 respectively. And with the smaller tail footprint, chances are I'd change the rear number plate too to a smaller one to suit the new tail. The new smaller plate should cost RM10.

Add all in and that would be RM285 out of pocket. Let's see if my estimations on the bike servicing and installation of accessories are on mark, with my upcoming servicing coming up shortly.

  1. Hi there,

My name is Rao. I'm from Bangalore, India. You have a very informative blog. This is very helpful (and important) information that you are recording here.

I'm thinking of buying the 2012 model of 650-R, here in Bangalore. I read about all the different modifications you have already made on your Green Hornet. Can you tell me if there are any online stores who ship to India?

Thanks a lot and keep up the great work!
